Cougars capture 6th place in team competition
at the SEPA Varsity Classic!

Friday and Saturday,  December 7th & 8th, 17
High Schools competed in the Southeast
Wrestling Classic at Perkiomen Valley High
School.  
Those taking home medals for the Varsity squad
included: Joe Linskens placed 2nd at 125lbs.,
Amro Elansari placed 2nd at 285lbs., Bill Heemer
placed 3rd at 130lbs., Rob Fitzgerald placed 4th
at 140lbs., and Brian Fitzgerald placed 5th at
160lbs.

Those taking home medals for the JV include:
Tyler Mayes with a 2nd, Joe Miller and Cooper
Williams  both earning 4th place.

Cougars Take W. C. East in first Ches Mont Dual of the Season, 56 - 16.

Starting at 119lbs. for the night, Steve Palmieri scored the first pin for the evening.  He was followed by
Joe Linskens at 125lbs., Rob Fitzgerald at 145lbs., Max Narewski at 152lbs., and Chris Palmieri at
189lbs.  Junior Captain, Bill Heemer (130lbs.) and Senior Captain, Ian Meakim (140lbs.) both scored
major decisions.  Captain, Brian Fitzgerald (160lbs) took a forfeit and Amro Elansari won by injury
default in the 285lb. weight  bracket.

JV wrestlers recording wins for the evening include: Jason Henry (WBF), Mason Burt (TF), Will Goldman
(TF), Scott Engle (WBF), and Joe Miller (WBF).

Congratulations to the team and coaching staff of Joe Horvath, Jim May, Tony DeLuca and Ben Young
on their first Ches-Mont win of the season!

On Saturday, December 15th the Cougars, headed by Coaches May and DeLuca
competed, in the JV Strath Haven Tournament.  Wrestler's placing in the top 4 for the
day are as follows:

Amro Elansari -          1st (4-0) at 285

Scott Engle -               1st (4-0) at 135
Dan Linskens -           2nd (3-1) at 103

The Cougars captured their 2nd dual in the Ches-Mont with a score of 69-9 over Bishop Shanahan.

The Cougars recorded seven Falls for the evening. Captains Bill Heemer at 130lbs., Ian Meakim at
140lbs., and Brian Fitzgerald at 171lbs., recorded falls along with Dan Linskens at 112lbs., Brian
Carter at 135lbs., Rob Fitzgerald at 145lbs., and David Medearis at 215lbs.  Sophomore, Chris
Palmieri scored a decision with a score of 7-4.

Bishop Shanahan gave up forfeits in the 103, 119, 125, and 285lb. weight classes, scored a decision

Dec. 28th & 29th, 2007 - The two day "Ralph Wetzel Classic" at Hatboro Horsham H.S. was
competitive and exciting to watch as 19 teams battled it out on the mat.  

The Varsity advanced wrestlers in the first round in the following weight classes:
103,119,125,130,135,140,145,152,160,215 and 285 lbs.  Wrestlers advancing to the semi-finals
were: Joe Linskens (125lbs.), Bill Heemer (130lbs.), Ian Meakim (135lbs.) and Amro Elansari
(285lbs.)

Third round of consolations began at 9:00am on Saturday.  Steve Palmieri at 119lbs. and Rob
Fitzgerald at 145lbs. advanced to the next round. In the winner bracket semi finals, Bill Heemer at
130lb.s advanced into the finals with a MD 13-0. while Ian Meakim, Joe Linskens and Amro Elansari
dropped down into the consolation semi finals.  

Steve Palmieri and Rob Fitzgerald finished the tournament with 6th place.  Joe Linskens,Ian Meakim
and Amro Elansari advanced into the 3rd place finals.  Joe Linskens at 125lbs., took home a 4th, Ian
Meakim at 135lbs. and Amro Elansari at 285lbs. both won their final matches taking home 3rd place
medals.  Bill Heemer was the 2nd place finisher in the fight for 1st place.

The JV squad had a great two days as well.  Freshmen, Scott Engle at 135lbs. worked through the
tournament by pinning all 4 of his opponents. He placed 1st  with Fall in 3:10 over Nick Torres of
Highland Regional. Freshman, Joe Miller at 152lbs., placed 1st with a Fall in 3:15 over David Kim of
Upper Moreland and finished the tournament with three Falls and one decision in the two day event.

The Cougars competed along with 10 other teams at the Octorara Duals on Saturday January
5th, 2008.  The day was filled with much excitement and accomplishments for the Cougars.

With the team's first win of the morning over Perkiomen Valley, 35-22, Coach Joseph Horvath
received his
100th team win as a Head Wrestling Coach in Downingtown.  The team continued
to battle on to make a clean sweep with wins over: Bethpage (NY) 41-29, Pius X (District 11)
60-23, Conestoga Valley 43-21, and concluded their 11hour day with a victory over Plymouth
Whitemarsh 38-27 to take home the 1st place team trophy.

Cougars Battle It Out With West Chester Henderson In League Dual.

Downingtown East and West Chester Henderson have been producing close scores for years
now.  This year it was Henderson who came out on top with a  32-27 win over our Cougars.  

The JV squad wrestled 8 matches and won 5 of them.  Freshmen: Will Goldman, Scott Engle,
Cooper Williams and Joe Miller all recorded Falls for the team while Bill Whalen won by
decision 11-9.  Their final score was 27-18

The Varsity match started at 103lbs. and Dan Linskens put 4 pts. on the board with a 10-1
score.  Bill Heemer at 130lbs.,placed another 4pts up with his major decision of 14-2.  Ian
Meakim, wrestling at 140lbs., came out fired up and recorded a prompt Fall to add another 6pts.
 Robbie Fitzgerald, at 145lbs., added 3 to the team score while brother, Brian Fitzgerald
wrestling at 160lbs, put up another 4pts. with his major decision of 13-0. The evening
concluded with David Medearis, who was bumped to the heavy weight spot and recorded a Fall
to give the Cougars their final score of 27 total team points for the evening.

The Cougars put in another full day of wrestling this Saturday, January 12th, at the Chichester
Duals.

The team wrestled and defeated: Danville 48-29, Chichester 68-5, Harriton 57-12, Roman Catholic
70-7 and Cardinal O'Hara 45-27 to take home the team trophy for the second year.

Wrestlers going 5 for 5 for the day were: Robbie Fitzgerald (5 Falls), Amro Elansari (5 Falls), Billy
Heemer, Ian Meakim, and Brian Fitzgerald, while Joe Linskens, Dave Medearis and Brian Carter went
4 and 1. The entire team put forth an impressive unified effort and were thrilled to be taking home the
team trophy.

Cougars Hosted Avon Grove for a lively Wednesday night of wrestling.                   
                                                       1/16/2008        

JV wrestled 12 matches and lost to Avon Grove 30-37.  Cougars putting points on
the board were: Eddie Draves (112) WBF, Will Goldman (125) WBF, Scott Engle
wrestled 2 matches (135) and WBF in both, and Joe Miller (152) WBF.

Between the JV and Varsity matches, the team, Coaches and Boosters presented
Coach Horvath with an engraved frame & photo to commemorate his 100th team
win on January 5th, 2008 against Perkiomen Valley H.S. (35-22) at the Octorara
Duals.  The Horvath family; wife Susan, son Bo and daughter Bailey were on hand
to help congratulate Coach Horvath on his win.  Coach Horvath addressed the
entire group of well wishers and thanked all of his 10 years of wrestlers and
families for their contributions to this accomplishment. The team presented Mrs.
Horvath with roses to thank her for the sacrifices she has made on behalf of
wrestling.

After the presentation,eight Downingtown East Varsity Wrestlers put points on the
board against Avon Grove in what typified a "Dual".

The Varsity match began at 103.lbs, where Eddie Draves took a FFT.  Joe
Linskens (125) scored 3 with a dec. 7-3.  Bill Heemer was deep into the second
period, was working hard on a TF, and while the ref. was holding 3, pinned for
6pts. Brian Carter (135) got off to a slow start then battled back for a dec. 9-4.  Ian
Meakim (140) maintained full control over his match for a dec. 9-1.  Brian
Fitzgerald (160) wrestled an intense match and kept it close for a dec. 4-3.  Dave
Medearis (215) stepped up and sealed the deal with a 1st period pin.  Last up for
the evening were the heavy weights.  Amero Elansari also battled in a match that
could have gone either way.  Eager to redeem himself after last week's loss at
Henderson, capitalized on an opportunity and pinned to close the dual 37-27.

Saturday, January 26th the team competed in the First Annual Rustin Rumble held at W.C.
Bayard Rustin H.S.  Eight teams brought their Varsity and Jr. Varsity squads to competed
in a Round Robin-style tournament.

Our JV squad had 7 wrestlers medal:

Seniors Celebrated At Home Match

Wednesday night our Seniors, Joe Linskens,
Brian Fitzgerald, David Mailey, David
Medearis and Ian Meakim were honored
along with their parents at the Cougar's
annual Senior Night.  

The Varsity squad went on to defeat
Coatesville with a final score of 58-10, thus
finishing 3rd in the Ches-mont National
Division (4-2).  Seniors: David Mailey (189)
dec. 9-3, David Medearis (215) WBF, Joe
Linskens (125) WBF, Ian Meakim (140) WBF
and Brian Fitzgerald (160) WBF all finished
their dual meet career with wins for the team
shedding a bright light on their special night.

Cougarsl Send 5 To District 1 AAA Tournament!

Saturday, February 16th, 10 District 1 Section 4 teams sent their top wrestlers to the Section 4
tournament held at Great Valley High School.  The Cougars faced some of the toughest
opponents in our Region and in the end we are proud to say 5 wrestlers are on their way to
the District 1 AAA Tournament next Saturday at Spring-Ford High School. Going into the
Section 4 tournament, Cougars ranking in the top 3 were: Joe Linskens (125), Billy Heemer
(130), Ian Meakim (135) and David Medearis (215). Brian Fitzgerald (171) and Amro Elansari
(285) were both ranked 2nd in their weight classes.
